Coe, Pete. @ b 24/3/1946. Pete & Chris Coe were amongst the first guests on the original Folk On Friday (BBC Radio 2). They turned professional in '71 and toured Europe during the 70's, whilst remaining residents at their own club, the legendary Old Crown, in Birmingham. Three duo albums were released. Chris's distinctive harmonies being an important feature of their singing of carefully chosen traditional songs accompanied on dulcimer, guitar & duet concertina plus some of Pete's own songs. Chris added Westmorland step dancing and hammer dulcimer reflecting their growing interest in Northern dance music.
In '78 they joined forces with Nic Jones & Tony Rose to form Bandoggs, which toured briefly but produced a much acclaimed album. then they joined forces with Muckram Wakes to form the New Victory Band whose dance tunes & arrangements are still to be heard from other bands & musicians at sessions up & down the country. Their album "One more dance & then" is scheduled for release on CD, plus some live tracks, in the near future. By '82 the musicians went on to do other things, working solo or playing in local dance bands(Chris Coe was in English Country Blues Band). John Adams had originally been in the Druids & then joined Muckram Wakes & was also leader of the New Victory Band. During the '80s, Pete , Chris & John were playing in Hooke's Law, John occasionally nipping off to play with the Dave Walters Band & The Old Swan Band. Pete continued working solo but in the late '80s formed Red Shift with John & Chris joined later. John has been a lecturer in media studies at Salford University for the past few years. In the meantime, Chris completed her degree course in Fine Art during the early '90s, continued to work solo, and developed her work with various theatre groups, including Northern Ballet, combining her musical & artistic skills. More recently she's worked in a duo with her daughter Lucy Adams. Although Pete & Chris haven't officially worked as a duo since '82, they've continued playing in the same bands, along with John, & are residents & organisers of their own club in Ripponden. Chris & John have played on Pete's recent solo albums...and rumour hath it that there might well be a joint recording project in the future.
